Description	Opening ceremonies of the Century 21 Exposition (Seattle World's Fair). "Seattle shattered into a galaxy of wild excitement yesterday as the World's Fair made its thundering debut…Water-skiers zipped around the oval course in the stadium. The daring aerialists of the Circus Berlin cavorted on a slender cable stretched between the Stadium and the Space Needle, 300 feet above the crowd. Cheering thousands began swarming over the fair." (Stanton H. Patty, Seattle Times, April 22, 1962, p. C.) Memorial Stadium was built in 1948 in memory of former Seattle high-school students killed in World War II. Owned by the Seattle School District, it was leased to the Century 21 Exposition for the Seattle World’s Fair. The Fair’s opening ceremonies and many large events were held there.
