We live by the numbers
Numbers are the stop and go signals of our civilization. As our most exact and reliable symbols for measuring fact, we use them perhaps hundreds of times a day in shopping, telephoning, paying bills, etc. For example, we write almost 13 billion checks a year, nearly twice as many as 10 years ago, and the figure keeps growing. Numbers are the natural language of the computer, man’s most efficient tool for managing them.
