kited   glamorously   in   Seattle   on
Ap+il   21,   that's   exactly   what    the
ledger sheet showed.
Actually, when the Queen City
was committed to the responsibility of
staging America's first world's fair
since 1939, local officials spent many
restless nights, fearful that the "break
even" attendance figure of 7,500,000
visitors would never be reached. Now
they are worrying even more so about
the problems of accommodating possibly 12 million tourists from all corners of the globe-
Without question, the Seattle
World's Fair will be one of the gayest and gaudiest expositions of all
rime. More than a million dollars an
acre has been invested in the 74-aere
"jewel box" site of the exciting event.
Private, governmental and foreign
capital is intermingled in this huge
UNITED   STATES   INVESTOR
for every square foot of educational
uplift, there's a similar dimension lor
fun and fancy.
Enterprising New Yorkers filled
the swamps of Flushing .Meadow to
stage this country's last world's fair
23 years ago. Seattleites razed old
buildings within a brisk walking distance from city center to provide their
exposition grounds.
Strangely enough, the Russians
(who won't be exhibiting) had an indirect hand in determining the scope
of rhc Seattle fair. After they
launched their Sputniks, it was rumored—at home and abroad—that
America was a scientific laggard. To
counter such adverse gossip, Congress
looked around for a likely place to
disprove the international scuttlebutt.
Seattle at that time was considering a much smaller regional fair, but
with the promise of as much as £12
million in Federal funds, local promoters began to think bigger and
bigger.
The   final    decision    was   made   in
Paris when a Seattle delegation presented a convincing argument before
the Bureau of International Expositions, the 30-nation body which confers official "world's fair" status.
Against virtually insurmountable
odds—primarily from the New York
Fair of 1964—the Century 21 Exposition won the BIE's recognition
and promptly became a global extravaganza.
Space Needle Is Symbol
Architectural symbol of the Seattle World's Fair is the much balh-
hcoed Space Needle, a 600-foot slender steel spire topped by a revolving
restaurant.
Like the Eiffel Tower of the
Fourth French International of 1889,
the Space Needle not only dominates
the exposition but is expected to become a Seattle landmark for generations to come. From its lofty dinery
and observation deck, visitors get a
sweeping panoramic view of the
beautiful Puget Sound country. Every
