This report is a challenge to Seattle --it recommends the
expenditure of approximately ten million dollars to bring Seattle1 s
public facilities up to par* This is a practical program for a growing community*
The report is a two-fold plan:
1* The acquisition of 32* 1 acres of land on the First Hill area
and the building of a convention hall to seat 3, 500 (ideally designed for concert purposes) with first-floor area for meetings,
banquets, etc*, and a smaller theater of 500-800 for children's
creative dramatics* amateur theater, etce (8-1/2 million)
2* The acquisition of additional land in the Civic Auditorium
area for adequate parking and the conversion of the Civic Auditorium building to a first-class sports center and exposition
area* (1-1/2 million)
We in Seattle have felt a great need of many years for adequate
public facilities for sport, cultural and commercial purposes* The
Civic Center Committee was organized in January,, 1954, to study this
problem and now we come to you with our first report--a report which
reflects the considered judgment of many architects, engineers and
real estate people* I feel this is a creditable job to which the community owes a debt to Waldo Christenson and the many able people
