From Page iii : "The American Library Association sponsored an exhibit at the Seattle World's Fair (Century XXI World Exposition) in Seattle, Washington, April 21 - October 21, 1962. The concept of this exhibit was that of a LIBRARY OF THE FUTURE, and in it could be found the latest forms of library service and design, the newer educational media? such as films, microfilms, television, audio devices, including advanced means of storing, retrieving, and communicating bibliographic information. The staffing and dissemination project supported by this contract focused on this new library education setting and assisted in the evaluation of new untried techniques by professional librarians. The LIBRARY 21 Exhibit was staffed by librarians especially trained under this project to work with the public in the interpretation of unique library tools demonstrated by industry. The purposes of the staffing and dissemination project were to provide librarians with an educational experience in a machine-library environment; to explore professional reaction to the introduction of such entirely new concepts; and to evolve valid criteria for the development of advanced library school curricula. This contract provided staff for the Learning Resources Center, Ready Reference Desk, Children's World, and Adult Reading Area as well as other areas where the public had the opportunity to ask questions, use library materials, and interact with machines. Also provided was a program of education and training for the staff at the contractor's School of Librarianship. A prototype Learning Resources Center was also designed and constructed under terms of the contract. This Center included a "quest" space or mode! study area featuring newer media appropriate for instruction in several subject areas . "The end product of this project is the preparation of a case study which analyzes the educational experience of professional librarians in this new library environment, the feasibility of utilizing the newer educational media for this type of instruction, and drawing of conclusions which will help frame future library programs, select fruitful paths of research, guide the development of library school curricula, and chart the way towards new dimensions in the use of newer educational media in elementary, secondary, and higher education."
