BALLARD DIRECTORY-
The leading manufacturing town of the Sound. Incorporated under the General Incorporation laws of the State. Mayor,
Charles F. Treat; Councilmen: T. W. Lake, W. Mannay, A. W.
Hight, J.J. Holland, D. McVay; Treasurer, J. A. Peabody; Clerk,
Charles Hadfield; Assessor, S. D. Murphy; Marshal, H. Mc-
Curry; Postmaster, A Gr Thompson; Telegraph, Western Union;
Express, Northwestern.
Located at the head of Salmon Bay, about two miles from
Seattle, on a plateau gently sloping to the water. The town was
started but little over a year ago and has now a population * of
1500, with planked and graded streets, water works and an electric railroad connecting with Seattle. The following is a partial
list of the principal industries: Three shingle mills, sash and
door factory, three saw mills, steel and iron works, six hotels,
school house, four churches, boiler works, two ship yards, three
blacksmith shops. Fine deep water harbor, Salmon Bay being
the mouth of the proposed ship canal connecting Lake Washington with the Sound. The Seattle, Lake Shore & Eastern Ry
passes along the water front and the proposed route of the Great
Northern crosses through the western end of the town.
